Oil is primarily used as a medium for insulation and cooling, possessing privileges over dry transformers in being the most widespread and cost-effective in terms of price value and being used in small, medium, and large capacities. The main difference between oil and dry transformers lies in the insulation and cooling medium, which is the oil used in the transformer, making it more suitable for outdoor areas and requiring periodic maintenance and oil changes to maintain efficiency and quality.
Oil type transformers are divided into four types based on their cooling method:
– Oil Natural Air Natural cooled transformers (ONAN)
– Oil Natural Air Forced cooled transformers (ONAF)
– Oil Forced Air Natural cooled transformers (OFAN)
– Oil Forced Air Forced cooled transformers (OFAF)
